Built as a ‘temple of the periphery’ of Sydney, the water treatment plant in Richmond blends the temporality of the infrastructural systems with the semi permanence of the monument that houses them, providing an answer to the question of ‘what happens after’? The two clashing geometries also reference the existing train line (north) that connects Richmond to Sydney, as well as the existing roads to the south, allowing it to have a connection to not only it’s immediate surroundings but also Greater Sydney. The proposal also allows the speculation of what may have been the primary use for the space in the past, and opens the dialogue for what may become of it in the future. The render that shows the deconstructed elements of the overhead structure was chosen as a display piece in the end of year exhibition for final year Architecture students.
